Living Threads

This latest collage painting series explores the feelings of being interconnected with nature. Slowly observing the evolving patterns and rhythms of both the environment and the human body. Heightened through a recent personal experience of perceiving the body as a field of vibrations during period of silent meditation.

This is a solo presentation of new works, represented by the Dot Project gallery as part of Foundations Winter 2024 - an online fair on Artsy.

The Peace of Wild Things

‘The Rest of the Song’ was included in an online exhibition of works by the Violet Hour called The Peace of Wild Things. There were 38 works by 38 artists. The exhibition raised £4,488 for Choose Love projects in Gaza and Southern Israel.

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

The show is inspired by a poem:

The Enkindled Spring

This spring as it comes bursts up in bonfires green,

Wild puffing of emerald trees, and flame-filled bushes,

Thorn-blossom lifting in wreaths of smoke between

Where the wood fumes up and the watery, flickering rushes.

I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration

Of green fires lit on the soil of the earth, this blaze

Of growing, and sparks that puff in wild gyration,

Faces of people streaming across my gaze.

And I, what fountain of fire am I among

This leaping combustion of spring? My spirit is tossed

About like a shadow buffeted in the throng

Of flames, a shadow that's gone astray, and is lost.

Sustainability First Art & Essay Prizes

The corona pandemic is currently affecting every area of peoples’ lives across the globe. As we emerge from the crisis, how do we ensure a sustainable recovery – which balances economic, social and environmental wellbeing? Sustainability First ran Art and Essay Prizes, inviting original, radical ideas and visions in response to the question: ‘How do we build from the current corona crisis towards a more sustainable future?’

We had a fantastic response to these creative competitions with over 1100 artworks and over 100 essays. We are extremely grateful to all the entrants who have shared their creative visions and ideas. It has been a challenging process to carefully review the entries and select a shortlist for each competition. We are also grateful to our judging panels for their time considering the works.

We show cased the prizewinning and shortlisted works at a live event on 1 July with interviews with judges and entrants, which was streamed through the Sustainability First YouTube Channel. We have also produced a virtual book with artwork images, ideas and insights from entrants. For more information visit the Sustainability First website.

What she didn't say @ Thames Side Studios Gallery (re-opening)

Expanded paintings, sculptures and weavings by four female artists focusing on the boundaries and spaces between our inner experience of being and what we are able to express to others. The works lure you in with beauty but have an uneasiness and disquiet. Fragmented, translucent with traces of existence, but no humans present.

Clare Dudeney's freeform weavings map intangible, unspoken thoughts and feelings through relationships of colour and shape. Justine Formentelli's paintings and sculptures explore the interaction between our internal landscapes and the external world; and how our personal geology made of memories, fleeting sensations, key life events and areas of ambiguity define our perception. Rachel Goodison invites us to experience the spaces in between her playful sculptural forms, exploring the emotions we feel when surrounded by familiar materials presented in unfamiliar ways. Maddie Yuille's domestic interior paintings illuminate the inanimate, like a film cutaway from the drama, they offer glimpses of life without coherent narrative.

Adam Zeman is a Neuroscientist from Exeter University whose research focuses on visual imagination. Asking: how are mental images produced, what happens to the brain in states of flow, how can weather affect human emotions and what creates consciousness?

Artists from the Wilderness Art Collective present ‘Wilderness for the Mind’ and online exhibition highlighting the connection between nature and mental wellbeing at this strange and unprecedented time. The show includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, collage, weavings, photography, video and installation. There will be daily interviews, studio visits and artist demonstrations.

Our courageous, experimental explorer artists whose life experiences inform their works vary in extremity in their desire to connect fully with nature: wild swimming, parascending, mountaineering and extreme sailing. During Lockdown, many of the artists have found new sources of inspiration in their local environments – offering mindfulness meditations and walks in nature specifically recorded for this exhibition.

The birds are singing in the distant woods

I am taking part in a show curated by the The Violet Hour. This deliberately optimistic title is taken from Wordsworth’s poem, Resolution and Independence. We wanted to encapsulate an expression of the hope that resides in the natural world and the aspiration of a dream for a better future, which is common to the whole of humanity, especially in a time of crisis.

All the work in this unique and far-reaching show is priced between £200 - £500. 20% of every sale will go to St Mungo’s to help the homeless, and to foster an environment in which people can overcome their isolation and rebuild their lives. ONLINE ONLY from 25 th May – 25th June 2020 at www.violethour.org

There are 24 artists in the show: Yuki Aruga, Karen Beare, Kim Booker, Abi Box, Alfie Caine, Clare Dudeney, Rachel Goodison, Katie Goodwin, Tyga Helme, Jack Lewis, Juliette Losq, Ann Mackowski, Suzy Moxhay, Max Naylor, Michael O’ Reilly, Amelia Power, Lex Shute, Bronwen Sleigh, Katie Trick, Felicity Warbrick, Jane Ward, Eleanor Watson, Alice Wilson, Maddie Yuille
